KATE OSBORNE: So many people are telling me they can’t see any hope of things getting better
The cost-of-living crisis is hitting our communities hard – people are understandably worried about how they are going to pay their bills and feed their families over the coming months. Inflation at a 41-year-high of 11.1%, rising food, energy and transport costs meaning life is difficult for many in our Jarrow constituency.
Every day I am inundated with constituents getting in touch, worried about how they are going to be able to pay their bills this winter and feed their families – never mind the added cost of Christmas. It is heartbreaking and the blame lies solely at the door of this Conservative Government.
Me and my team continue to help residents daily who are struggling to cope, some of whom have faced rent arrears and eviction threats, while many others are simply unable to cover the sky-high costs of energy and food bills – like Kathleen from Wardley a 73 year old woman who told me she has cut back on both heating and eating and the couple living in Hebburn with 2 kids – both in work who a year ago were donating to foodbanks – now using them – they have given up their car -and because of the cost of living crisis they are at risk of losing their home.
So many people telling me they cannot see any hope of things getting better, no light at the end of the tunnel.
Yesterday in parliament I raised these issues, the Chancellor’s autumn statement leaves people facing a winter of hardship, this never ending austerity leading to a further decline in our living standards.
It is hugely important to me that Jarrow constituents know what support is available to them and how to access this support.
Because of the volume of people impacted, I have organised a Cost-of-Living Roadshow.
We will be joined by organisations, including Citizens Advice, Age UK, Veterans Response, Mental Health Concern as well as representatives from each local authority.
The roadshows start Friday 9th December, at Heworth Leisure Centre in Gateshead from 10am-11.30am and then 2pm-3.30pm at Perth Green Community Centre in Jarrow.
Please do come along. It is more important than ever that we support each other and reach out if in need of help.
We need a change in direction and a change in Government until we have that, I will do all I can to support our community through this crisis.
Cost of Living Roadshow with Kate Osborne MP
Cost-of-Living Roadshow organised by Jarrow MP Kate Osborne.
Kate Osborne MP has organised a cost-of-living roadshow to reach out to local residents and ensure that they know how and where to access support as we head into a tough winter.
Kate Osborne said: “The cost-of-living crisis is hitting our community hard, and people are understandably worried about how they are going to pay their bills and feed their families over the coming months.”
“The Government has created economic chaos and sadly it is everyday people who are shouldering the burden as a result.”
“Our foodbanks are seeing demand rocket and shelves empty faster than they can be restocked – more and more working people now relying on foodbanks to feed themselves and their families.”
“I am inundated with constituents getting in touch, worried about how they will be able to pay their bills this winter and feed their families – it’s heartbreaking.”
“It is hugely important to me that Jarrow constituents know what support is available to them and how to access this support.”
“That is why I have organised a Cost-Of-Living Roadshow so those who are in need of support can come along and speak to myself and other organisations that are offering support.”
These Roadshows launch on 9th December, with the first being held at Heworth Leisure Centre from 10am-11.30am. The second session will be held later in the day on the 9th from 2pm-3.30pm at Perth Green Community Centre.

Kate Osborne MP echos criticism of BBC analysis of politicians’ abuse.
I had two interviews, one last month and a short radio interview yesterday with the BBC regarding the abuse I receive in person, online and how it felt to give evidence in court.
Abuse of MPs is a serious issue that I have and will continue to speak out about.
Both in my pre-recorded interview last month and my live interview yesterday, I pointed out that it is statistically proven women receive more abuse than men and black women face even more abuse specifically mentioning Diane Abbott and the horrendous abuse she faces.
I also discussed the need for MPs to be held to account – but that shouldn’t stray into abuse.
Yesterday the BBC published their analysis and when you look at the list of MPs you can immediately see something isn’t right.
There are a number of concerns that I think the BBC need to address with their methodology.
Firstly it seems to me this methodology is unhelpfully conflating abuse and democratic accountability with this algorithm.
It isn’t toxic to say an MP has lied when they have been proven to be untruthful.
It isn’t toxic to point out MPs being hypocritical.
The algorithm flagged the use of “liar” “hypocrite” and “disgrace” to identify tweets as unreasonable or rude.
The algorithm also used “Tory” to flag toxic, unreasonable or rude tweets.
None of these words in isolation constitute abuse.
Secondly the algorithm does not seem to classify common terms of racist abuse as toxic.
This obviously makes the findings that white men receive the most abuse unreliable.
Their methodology flags tweets that complain about people’s transphobia, racism and homophobia as toxic – but fails to recognise key terms of abuse which targets ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+ people.
It really is disappointing that the BBC’s analysis is so unreliable and is being used to downplay the abuse targeted at women and other minority groups.
I do not want the abuse I receive and the guilty verdict from my harassment case used to give credibility to this flawed analysis.
The BBC should urgently review the methodology used to ensure it looks at the words and language used and commit to a more thorough broader investigation both in terms of the time period looked at and the specific abusive words/language used to establish a more reliable data set and look at the real scale of the problem
I have written to the BBC outlining my concerns above.

If we don’t fight for the NHS it won’t survive until the next General Election – Labour Outlook
Now that the Tories have installed Rishi Sunak as the new Tory Prime Minister – our NHS may well be one of their first victims.
Liz Truss lasted just 44 days as Prime Minister, yet her actions in that short amount of time caused untold damage to our economy and country. Rishi Sunak has been chosen for us by Tory MPs – but we all know that the new PM will not mean a change from Tory planned cuts to our NHS and public services.
At the time of writing 3 Prime Ministers, 4 Chancellors and 3 Home Secretaries in the space of just 115 days – each one of them putting the needs of big business and the wealthiest ahead of our communities.
Last week at PMQs I asked the then Prime Minister about privatisation – highlighting that privatisation never works – it hasn’t worked for Royal Mail – and it hasn’t worked for the NHS and I highlighted the damage Jeremy Hunt did to our NHS.
Liz Truss had no answer of course – but ridiculously her one line response accused me of being ideological.
The next morning she resigned.
If it’s ideological to oppose cuts to vital public services to oppose privatisation and stand up for workers, then of course I am ideological and make no apologies for it.
We all know the Tory ideology – run down our public services, starve them of resources to make them cheaper to privatise and give to their mates to make money from. Nowhere is that more evident than our NHS where decades of privitastion by stealth has led to billions going into the pockets of privateers at the expense of patients – profit being put over public health and our communities.
Every political decision is ideological & Rishi Sunak – a Prime Minister who is twice as rich as the king – will continue to make decisions based on a system of capitalism, and continue to starve our NHS of funding and resources.
So back to Jeremy Hunt – and his attempts to reinvent himself as a saviour of the country when his term as Health Secretary did lasting damage to our NHS.
Our new chancellor sold off our NHS Blood service when he was the Health Secretary. He sold our NHS blood supplier – Plasma Resources UK – to Bain Capital, a US company for £230million.
Bain Capital then sold it for £820m – the NHS Blood service now has an amber alert with just 2 days of some blood supplies.
Hunt gave the US medical centre chain Virginia Mason 12.5 million to teach NHS hospitals about safety on the basis they were “probably the safest hospital in the world” – a few months later they failed their inspection.
Hunt oversaw a company jointly owned by the Department of Health lose more than 700,000 pieces of medical correspondence – including records and cancer test results. This cost 6.6 million but disgracefully harmed more than 1700 patients – Hunt was criticised for a conflict of interest and for trying to cover up what had happened.
Another error saw 450,000 women not receiving invites for breast screening with Hunt telling parliament 270 women may have died as a result.
So many deaths as a result of privatisation and the running down of our NHS.
Fast forward to now and our NHS is in crisis, with many more deaths every year from the impact privatisation has had. A recent report by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine found that at least 4,519 patients died as a result of crowding and 12-hour A&E stays in England in 2020-2021.
This was the stark warning this weekend from Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, who said the government is “living in a fantasy land” if it believes it can cut funds to the NHS without endangering patients.
I spoke at the launch of We Own It’s new campaign to end privatisation and save lives – their campaign carrying out research that clearly links preventable deaths to austerity – on the same day we saw widespread media reports of people dying in ambulances whilst they waited to get into hospital.
This campaign is much needed – people need to have clear facts on the devastating impact privatisation is having on our NHS.
We must also tackle the false narrative that because of covid and the backlog we need to use the private sector to bring down waiting lists – we know this just isn’t the case- the more the private sector becomes involved, the worse the situation becomes as capacity from the NHS is reduced and private companies cherry pick easy and lucrative cases.
Therese Coffey the current Health Secretary (who knows how long for) is lobbying Jeremy Hunt to give the NHS even less money! Who does that? Most Secretaries of State lobby the Chancellor for more money for their departments, not less – a clear continuation of the attempts to drive down our NHS and leave us reliant on a US style system of insurance based health care.
The BBC at the weekend reported the NHS is at a gridlock, unacceptable levels of maternity care leading to 45 preventable deaths in babies at one health trust. Through covid Boris Johnson said he was happy to see the bodies pile high – now we are seeing the bodies pile high through Conservatives neglect of our vulnerable.
Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, this weekend also said the government is “living in a fantasy land” if it believes it can cut funds to the NHS without endangering patients.
Privatisation has led to billions of pounds being taken in profit for private companies at the expense of services and has led to increased deaths from treatable causes
We must put a stop to this.
We need to ensure people know what is happening in our NHS – this deliberate destruction of our services and we must demand the NHS to be completely renationalised.
‘We Own Its’ new campaign and ‘Your NHS Needs You’ are fantastic campaigns demanding the NHS be renationalised, arming people with facts and working with celebrity voices to ensure the message reaches a wider audience. SOS NHS are also carrying out vital campaigning work and I will be speaking at their conference on the 12th November.
There are so many parts of our NHS that are desperate for investment, but if that investment just goes into the pockets of privateers we will never deal with the backlog, the millions waiting for routine operations, the severe delays in ambulance waiting times or the crisis in staffing.
We can’t go on like this – our NHS will not survive much longer if we do not start reversing the damage that privatisation is doing.
People need a government that will tackle the cost of living crisis that the Conservatives have caused – not a continuation of their cuts to the NHS and public services and policies that leave millions living in poverty.
Instead of yet another Prime Minister chosen by Tories – Truss should have called an election. That is what the country needs – A change of direction, a new Government.
If Sunak cared about the country he would now call a General Election.
I hope that we get a general election soon – but whenever we get one – we need to fight to end NHS privatisation and save lives and we need to do it now.
That fight cannot be concentrated in parliament – we need a movement behind us – every one of our communities demanding the NHS puts their needs ahead of profit.
‘Your NHS Needs You’ are launching the next steps in their campaign to do just that to create a movement calling for renationalisation – I will do all I can within the constraints of parliament – but we need all of you to get involved and join the Movement to Renationalise the NHS!
Poverty is a political choice that Sunak will continue to make.
The people of South Tyneside don’t want another unelected Tory Prime Minister, they want – and need – change. They need a Government that will undo the damage inflicted by the Conservative’s, a Government that will look after our vulnerable kids and our elderly.
Continue readingThreat to cut benefits harks back to Jarrow Crusade days
Kate’s latest column for the Shields Gazette:
As most of you will know, 200 local people set off from Jarrow on a near 300-mile trek to London carrying a 12,000-named petition to the Conservative Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.
At that time around 70 per cent of workers in the town were unemployed. Britain in the 1930s was left crippled by the Great Depression, and its areas of heavy industry, such as Jarrow, were among those who were hit the hardest.
When the marchers reached London the Conservative Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, shamefully failed to meet with them and when they returned home many found their benefits had been cut because they had not been available to work.
We see sharp similarities with the conservative government of today – threatening to cut benefits for those looking for work.
Liz Truss’s Government making incompetent decisions and lying to all of us – causing yet more devastation to our already struggling communities.
Yesterday Truss doubled down on her kamikaze budget – despite another warning from the Bank of England that the government’s budget is making their battle against inflation more difficult.
This Government’s budgetary plans have crashed our economy, mortgage offers have been withdrawn. Those with mortgages paying hundreds more.
Families struggling to pay rent increases, spiralling energy bills and food prices – yet Liz Truss failed to answer a single question at this week’s PMQs – instead, her Cabinet told us why the Bank of England were wrong!
The impact of the Tory-made cost-of-living crisis continuing is clear to see in Jarrow – this week’s polling showed us that 66% of people in our constituency are having to cut back on their essential groceries. 41% are worried about affording their rent and 28% are worried about becoming homeless.
We are already seeing more people using foodbanks and a further 32% are worried they will need to use one – the foodbanks in our constituency provide a wonderful service – including Bede’s Helping Hands’ new Community Fridge which I had the pleasure of visiting when it opened – but they should not be necessary. It is outrageous that in the sixth richest country in the world we have millions trapped in poverty.
The Government are repeatedly letting down our communities, up and down the country now, we are seeing more and more people take industrial action, unable to cope with the lowest wage growth on record. Thousands of workers standing up and saying to this government enough is enough. This week, nurses in the Royal College of Nursing started their ballot for industrial action – they have my full support – this Government as well as destroying communities is intent on destroying our NHS.
It doesn’t have to be like this – these are all political choices made by this government.
We must have urgent investment in our communities, in public services, in our NHS – not tax cuts for the wealthiest and a lift on the cap of bankers’ bonuses.
No one in Jarrow voted for these plans – I will continue to do all I can to stand up for and support the people of Jarrow – but we need a General Election now to stop this madness.
Jarrow March Project launches today (6th October 2022)
The Jarrow March project will be launching on the 6th of October 2022, encouraging people in the northeast to walk, run, cycle or any other method they may choose in replication of the original Jarrow march, to raise funds for local foodbanks.
The Jarrow March project will raise funds for local foodbanks while making a statement to the government about the ongoing cost of living crisis. Commencing on the 6th of October 2022 and finishing on the 31st of October, participants will commit to attempting to cover a distance of 300 miles – the same as the original marchers – to fundraise for foodbanks in the northeast.
The last day of the project will culminate at Jarrow Town Hall where we will invite anyone who has taken part, or indeed anyone at all, to walk the first mile that the original Jarrow Marchers walked as our last mile.
We understand that 300 miles may be daunting or unrealistic for some so while 300 miles is the target even 1 mile makes a difference.
The Jarrow March of 1936 happened due to extreme unemployment in Jarrow, many families found themselves unable to sustain themselves, a situation all too familiar for working class families today.
200 men marched 300 miles from Jarrow to the gates of parliament demanding for jobs to be brought back to the region.
We therefore want to bring the spirit of the Jarrow March into 2022 and give some power back to the people who need it most, all while fundraising for foodbanks who can provide support to those who find themselves struggling.
Jarrow MP Kate Osborne is supporting the Jarrow March Project and has committed to participating.
Kate Osborne MP said “I think the Jarrow March Project is a brilliant initiative by James. Our area has a rich history, and this project shines a light on the part of our history that Jarrow is perhaps most known for, the Jarrow March.”
“Unfortunately, the plight of the Jarrow Marchers is similar to the struggles we face today.”
“With the cost-of-living crisis ravaging our communities, we are seeing more and more people being forced to use foodbanks to feed themselves or their families, many of whom are working people.
“Millions forced into poverty by successive Conservative Prime Ministers who are more concerned about giving tax cuts to the rich than feeding the poor”
“It is a shocking indictment of this Tory government that we have more foodbanks than we do branches of McDonalds.”
“The Government are repeatedly failing our communities, much like they did in 1936 when the original Marchers set off from Jarrow carrying their 12,000 strong petition. Across the country today, we are seeing an increase in industrial action, with thousands of workers standing up and saying enough is enough.”
“The Jarrow March Project is aiming to raise money for local foodbanks, and throughout October I will be taking part by walking 300 miles to raise money for the foodbanks in the Jarrow constituency. If you’re able to participate please do, and all donations will be gratefully received.”

Statement on today’s announcement of the new Prime Minister
Today we are finally seeing the back of a law-breaking scandal ridden Prime Minister.
Johnson has left the country in a state of crisis, with the majority living in fuel poverty, spiraling inflation, widening regional inequality, sewage pumped into our waterways and our NHS on it’s knees.
We sorely need a leader who can get a grip of the big issues – yet Liz Truss’s record does not inspire confidence.
It was Truss who cut millions from the Environment Agency’s budget
Truss who is threatening to set a bonfire to workers rights and impose pay cuts.
Truss promising to hand billions more to energy companies – companies that have already earned 170 billion in excess profits, telling the BBC these tax cuts for the richest are fair.
Truss as Minister for Women & Equalities who oversaw the clock being turned back on gender equality and instead of tackling inequalities declared a war on woke.
Truss for the last 12 years has been part of the erosion of our living standards, with the Conservative ethos of profit good, public services bad.
The Conservatives will try to spin Truss’s Premiership as a new chapter – yet no page has been turned.
If the Conservatives are so sure that Truss is the right choice as leader of our country, they should put it to the people and let the electorate decide – because I have no doubt that the next Tory Government will be no better than the last.
We should freeze bills not people, saving households £1K this winter by freezing the energy cap
Read Kate’s latest column for the Shields Gazette:
Next week the House of Commons returns from its summer recess with a new prime minister to be announced – but as the two candidates have made clear we should expect more of the same callous disregard of our communities.
I have spent the summer recess touring our Jarrow constituency with visits to communities, businesses and charities and throughout August holding summer roadshow drop-in events ensuring I spoke to every area from Pelaw and Leam Lane in Gateshead to Jarrow, Hebburn, Cleadon and Boldon.
After a difficult couple of years through the pandemic, to be able to spend the entire summer out and about in our wonderful constituency felt like a real pleasure, meeting so many constituents in every ward of the constituency and to talk about so many important issues.
Going back to parliament we will finally see the back of the current incompetent Prime Minister, leaving after a disastrous two-and-a-half years in Downing Street his callous government deliberately failing to take any action on the cost of living crisis. Now we have 50% of families and 75% of older people at risk of being pushed into fuel poverty – and an ever increasing number of working families left with no option but to turn to their local food bank just to put food on the table, or to clothe their children. People are scared of how they are going to cope, how they are going to continue – and as I heard at Hebburn Helps – those that used to donate to the foodbank are now reliant on it themselves.
With the announcement of the new Prime Minister on Monday you would hope that there would be a change in direction – yet neither Sunak or Truss have indicated they will take action to help struggling families – Truss has specifically ruled out any further payments.
This week, we heard that the energy companies are going to make £170 Billion in excess profits. Proving once again that if left unchecked, private companies will continue to take immoral amounts in profit whilst working people are left unable to heat their homes, pay the bills or feed their families.
Enough is enough – we must stop people making profit at our expense – we need a windfall tax, a wealth tax, and to nationalise our essential services.
Labour would take action immediately to freeze bills not people and save households £1,000 this winter by freezing the energy price cap.
I am looking forward to the resumption of Parliament next week and to continue to take this shameful Government to task over their inexplicable running of this country – whoever the new Prime Minister is.
My work here in the constituency will continue as always I will champion our community and support everyone who lives here so do get in touch via [email protected] if you need any help, assistance or support or would like me to visit your business/community and follow on socials @kateosborneMP
