Kate was elected to serve as the Member of Parliament for the Jarrow constituency in the 2019 General Election.

Before entering Parliament Kate worked for Royal Mail for 25 years. Her first step into politics came in 2009, when she contested a by-election for Preston ward on North Tyneside Council, losing out to Conservative candidate. The following year, Kate was elected to represent Preston ward at the 2010 local elections, gaining the seat from the Conservative incumbent. She was re-elected to represent Preston in 2014, and again in 2018.

As a former trade union full time rep, workers’ rights are very important to Kate. She is extremely proud to be in a position now that allows her to hold the government to account and force Ministers to provide more support to workers.

An active member of the Labour Party for many years, Kate has served on the Labour Party National Constitutional Committee, still sits on and until her election was the Chair of Unite’s Regional Labour Party Liaison Committee and the Northern TUC Executive Committee.

Since her election to Parliament, Kate has served on the Women & Equalities Select Committee. She started her career in Parliament as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to then Rt Hon Diane Abbott MP. Kate is  a member of the Socialist Campaign Group of MPs in Parliament.

Kate is married with 2 sons and lives in the constituency.
